Student Profile: From Military Service to Student Servant-Leader

Ben Wadsworth was elected to the Student Senate as President in the spring of this year. At first, he didn’t see himself as someone who would run for Student Senate.

“I didn’t want to be involved in government or politics,” said Wadsworth, who left military service in 2013 and came to Minneapolis College for the Information Technology program. As he learned more about the student-run organization, he learned the Student Senate coincided with the passion he felt for the College.

HVACR Department’s Industry Partnership Featured in Media

HVACR (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) Instructors Greg Skudlarek, John Singel, and Hugo Morales secured the donation of a brand new, state of the art supermarket refrigeration system, and the donation of the work of experienced commercial HVAC/Refrigeration technicians and union pipefitters to install the system in our HVAC lab.

As a result of this donation, the College also received $170,000 in matching funds through the Minnesota State system’s Leveraged Equipment Program.

HVACR Student Among Top in National Skills USA Competition

Minneapolis College student Brady Lockwood, of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) program, took 6th place in the nation at the Skills USA competition that took place in Louisville, Kentucky in June.

HVACR Instructor Hugo Morales, who accompanied him on the trip, remarked, “He did very well and represented (the College) very well also.”

In-Demand Program: Sleep Technology

Rain, hail, lightning, thunder…Ernestina Genis won’t go under. Even the odd blizzard will not dissuade the 21-year-old Minneapolis College student from a typical day that looks like this:

A 12-hour shift as an intern at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital or Hennepin County Medical Center from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.; a dash home to take 4-year-old son Ethan to the YWCA for day care; a three-to-four nap; classes in her Sleep Technology classes at Minneapolis College, then back on the merry-go-round for the same curtain call.

Alisa Higgins - Addiction Counseling Program Alum Reaching for Her Dreams

When Alisa Higgins joined Minneapolis College’s Addiction Counseling Program, it was a new beginning. Laid off in March 2015 from a 20-year career, Alisa joined the Dislocated Workers Program, designed to help people who have been laid off overcome difficult barriers and get back to work as quickly as possible.

Through the program, Alisa, a first-generation college student, found Minneapolis College and decided to return to school to pursue her dream of helping people achieve and sustain recovery.
