COVID-19 international student visa regulations set by the Department of Homeland Security rescinded.

Fall 2020 visa regulations have reverted to the March 2020 directive allowing fully online international student enrollment for Spring 2020. Under normal circumstances, there is a limit to the online coursework international students can take each semester. During the last half of Spring 2020, the federal government allowed international students to take all online classes in response to COVID-19. 

When asked where home is, Muhammad “Taha” Hussain who moved to the United States just last year, pauses. It is a loaded question for someone who has already lived in 3 different countries before his 20th birthday.

Taha was born in Pakistan, living there until he was 9, when his family decided to move to Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. “Yanbu is a really small and beautiful city and we lived in the industrial area. I really liked all my neighbors and getting the chance to attend high school, but it was just so small.” 

Minneapolis College is proud to announce a new initiative, Breakthrough 2020–Bridging the Equity Gap. Established out of the social justice movement of 2020, surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd, this initiative seeks to identify, educate and cultivate future leaders through an affirming, learning-centered cohort experience where students are empowered to complete their educational journey, better themselves and their communities. 

Minneapolis College Career Services announces a new Career Ready Mentorship Program that allows students to engage in guidance from a mentor that aligns with their major and career choice. Students will benefit from authentic dialogue about their industry. The hope is that their career self-efficacy will grow while they solidify their plans and goals through one-on-one meetings with their mentor.

At this time, students majoring in Business, Information Technology, Healthcare, Science and Liberal Arts will participate in the program.

Woven Together in the Struggle for Justice, Change, Equity and Hope

As the Addiction Counseling Program at Minneapolis College completes its 50th year and the Collegiate Recovery Program, it’s third. Faculty and staff reflect on the powerful ripple effect their work has on individuals and the community.

“Since its inception in the fall of 1970, the Addiction Counseling program, which is the first of its kind in Minnesota, has had 2,121 graduates,” said Bayla McDougal, Addiction Counseling faculty member in and graduate of the Program.

When Oanh Vo moved to the United States from Vietnam in 2012 she already held a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of Foreign Languages at the University of Danang. Her intent was to enhance her language skills while pursuing an associate of science degree in business management at Minneapolis College, then return home to provide translation services. She did exactly that, however, once back in Vietnam, home didn’t feel like home any more.

The colleges and universities of Minnesota State have a message for students who have chosen to attend or are currently attending a college outside of Minnesota: with 30 colleges and 7 universities in 54 communities, every Minnesotan has an opportunity to help build their community and continue their higher education experience while staying close to home.

Minneapolis College student Deborah UpChurch won the Phi Theta Kappa Art Contest earlier this month. UpChurch is pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  After graduating in December of this year she will continue her studies at Metropolitan State University for a Bachelor’s Degree in the same field.

When Daniela Moreno Reyes moved to the United States from the capital city of Armenia of the Quindio department in Western Columbia 3 years ago to study English, she had no idea one of the most meaningful experiences of her life was ahead of her at Minneapolis College.
