Rain, hail, lightning, thunder…Ernestina Genis won’t go under. Even the odd blizzard will not dissuade the 21-year-old Minneapolis College student from a typical day that looks like this:

A 12-hour shift as an intern at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital or Hennepin County Medical Center from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.; a dash home to take 4-year-old son Ethan to the YWCA for day care; a three-to-four nap; classes in her Sleep Technology classes at Minneapolis College, then back on the merry-go-round for the same curtain call.

Alisa Higgins - Addiction Counseling Program Alum Reaching for Her Dreams

When Alisa Higgins joined Minneapolis College’s Addiction Counseling Program, it was a new beginning. Laid off in March 2015 from a 20-year career, Alisa joined the Dislocated Workers Program, designed to help people who have been laid off overcome difficult barriers and get back to work as quickly as possible.

Through the program, Alisa, a first-generation college student, found Minneapolis College and decided to return to school to pursue her dream of helping people achieve and sustain recovery.

"To put it simply: I’m a Minneapolis photographer with a mild obsession with Barbie. Influenced by imagery from the 50s and 60s, I create scenes with the dolls in studio that have a sense of whimsy mixed with a little sarcasm.

Dr. Jay Williams: Passion for Equity and Students at Minneapolis College

Williams grew up in rural Minnesota with an African American father and a Swedish-Irish mother. His father was raised in a sharecropping family in Mississippi, and his mother had ties to rural farmland. With immersion in these 2 worlds, Williams began to understand the importance of intercultural competence. 

“I think it was an early recognition of the importance of cultural fluency,” said Williams who was aware he didn’t have the tools to express and navigate the different worlds he was partaking in but knew the importance of them.

The Minneapolis College Public Safety Department will enhance its visibility in the community with the purchase of a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) that will provide additional safety and security in and around the Minneapolis College campus.

Secretary of State Steve Simon Visits Campus

Secretary of State Steve Simon visited Minneapolis College’s American Government and Politics Class in observance of National Voter Registration Day Sept. 24. Simon provided a summary of his role, detailed voting in Minnesota and engaged the students in a lively discussion about the importance of voting and how to continue increasing voter turnout throughout the state.
