Employers are looking for employees with hands-on experience, communication skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively on a team. How will you articulate these skills on your resume and in an interview? Student Life’s leadership programs will help you refine your skills, provide new and unique leadership opportunities, and learn from your experiences so that you can apply them to your future goals.
Student Senate
The Student Senate is the officially recognized representative of the student body at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. It is a great group to be a part of if you want to get involved and be a leader on campus. Becoming a member is easy! Simply attend 2 meetings in a row and, if eligible, you'll be ratified as a Senator at your third meeting.
The Student Senate meetings are open to everybody! This fall, they meet in a hybrid format every-other Thursday from 3 - 4 p.m. in H.2900 and on Zoom (No Passcode). They work on a wide variety of campus issues, ranging from developing college policy, to chartering new clubs, to coordinating the voter registration effort. If there is something on campus that you want to discuss with other students, this is the place to start. You may also visit the Student Senate members in their office, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Helland Center, H.2903. You can also contact the Student Senate on our D2L webpage or contact the Student Senate.
Student Senate Committees:
- Student Life Budget Committee
- Advocacy & Diversity Committee
- IT Committee
- Health & Sustainability
The leadership opportunities don't end on campus! If you are looking to get involved in statewide higher education issues, being active in LeadMN is a good way to do it. Every student at Minneapolis College is automatically a member. Students from the 30 two-year Minnesota State campuses meet monthly to discuss issues that they face on their campus, and ways to strengthen higher education. The goal of LeadMN is to provide every student with an affordable, accessible, and quality education. Visit the LeadMN website to learn more.

How do I bring an issue to the Student Senate?
The Student Senate is the platform for students’ voices to be heard. Your opinion is important to us, and we want to hear from you.
To have your item placed on the agenda, make sure to contact the Student Senate President prior to the Friday before the next Senate meeting.
For example, if you were to request an agenda item for a Senate meeting that falls on Thursday, September 19, your item must be turned in the Friday prior to the meeting, September 13.
Student Activities, Clubs and Organizations
In addition to Student Senate, a number of leadership opportunities exist across campus. As a student, you can join one of approximately 30 student clubs and organizations––or easily start your own group. Students can also play critical roles within each of these groups as a group leader.
Events and Workshops
Student Life organizes two student leadership conferences each year and sponsors students to attend leadership conferences on other campuses, such as the Power in Diversity conference at St. Cloud State University.
On a monthly basis, you’ll find Coffee and Culture Circles, dialogues about the rich diversity at Minneapolis College, as well as skill-based workshops on topics ranging from conflict management to running effective meetings.
