The following essay was awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the Racial Justice Oratorical Contest, held earlier this year in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr.’s celebration, “Amplifying Beloved Community.” The contest was open to Minneapolis College students, as well as juniors and seniors attending Metro Area public high schools. This year’s topic was Voting Rights.

Justin Third enrolled at Minneapolis College during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly learned he had a passion and a knack for the world of information technology, disability advocacy, leadership and mentoring. A native of Alabama, he is the first in his family to pursue a college education and found possibility in what he had thought impossible.

Black History Month Celebration

Join African American Education Empowerment (AME) in celebrating Black History Month: Honoring African American Culture and Achievement by attending one of their February events.

Charles Watson, African American Empowerment Coordinator at Minneapolis College, said, “Black History Month is a concrete expression of heritage, an opportunity to promote cultural awareness, and an example of everyday resistance by claiming pride in collective accomplishments.”

Recycle Organics on Campus

Many of us seek ways to lead more environmentally friendly lives and reduce our impact on the planet. One way to do that is through organics recycling or composting, which reduces the amount of waste that goes into landfills or is burned in incinerators. Organics recycling returns regenerated organic material to the earth and has other benefits as well.

Amazon Offers Tuition Reimbursement

Organizations throughout the Twin Cities offer tuition reimbursement for their employees to ensure they can achieve a rewarding career.

Through their Career Choice program, Amazon will now pay full tuition and fees for eligible full-time and part-time employees.

Career Choice launched in 2012, and more than 50,000 Amazon employees from 14 countries have participated. More than half of Amazon’s participants identify as Black, Hispanic or Native American.

Dear Minneapolis College Campus Community,

I am coming to you once again in a saddened state, mourning the recent murder of Amir Locke. On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at roughly 6:48 a.m., the Minneapolis Police Department performed a no knock warrant and within nine seconds of entering the apartment, the 22 year old Amir Locke was shot dead having barely awakened from his sleep. Unfortunately, we have come to know this story too well. And no matter how many times we try to rewrite the script, we get the same ending.
