English Proficiency Requirements

To be admitted to Minneapolis College as an international student, you must provide proof of English language proficiency. You can meet this requirement through test scores or successful completion of courses.

Test scores and academic reports must be emailed or mailed directly from the testing agency or college to International Student Services at:

Test scores cannot be older than 2 years. Documentation must be received by or before the published application deadline or it will be considered for admission to the following term.

Course Options

  • ELS Language Center at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
    Successful completion of Level 109 or Level 112 in the last 3 years. Completed coursework must be documented on ELS Language Centers transcript provided by ELS. Applicants with successful completion of Level 109 in the last three years will not be required to take the reading placement test and will receive placement into ESOL 0051 Writing and Grammar 5 and ESOL 0052 Reading 5. Applicants with successful completion of Level 112 in the last 3 years will not be required to take the reading placement test and will receive placement into READ 1300 Critical Reading of Academic Texts and ENGL 1110 College English I. Applicants are required to complete the math and ESOL Listening and Speaking placement tests prior to the admissions deadline.
  • Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) at the University of Minnesota.
    Successful completion of Level 3 or Level 4 within the last 3 years. Completed coursework must be documented by MELP and sent directly to Minneapolis College. Applicants who have successfully completed Level 3 will not have to go through the course placement process and will receive placement into ESOL 0051 Writing and Grammar 5 and ESOL 0052 Reading 5. Applicants who have successfully completed Level 4 will not have to go through the course placement process and will receive placement into ENGL 1110 College Composition and READ 1300 Critical Reading of Academic Texts. Applicants are still required to complete the placement process for Math and optional ESOL Listening and Speaking prior to the admissions deadline.
  • Recent completion of college level English composition course with a grade of C or higher from an accredited United States college or university.
    Make sure to request an Official Transcript from your college or university.  Please also send an unofficial transcript to Minneapolis College International Student Services.

    Enrolling in a language institute or other college/university with an F-1 visa allows you to transfer the F-1 visa record to Minneapolis College upon College upon successful completion.
