Minneapolis College welcomes lifelong learners and proudly offers Minnesota senior citizens access to free or substantially reduced-cost for credit-bearing courses. The information below explains eligibility, costs, registration timing, and the steps required to get started.
Minnesota Statute 15A.513 and Minnesota Statute 135A.52 and Minnesota State policies state that Minnesota residents aged 62 or older (or at least 60 years old and receiving a railroad retirement annuity) are eligible for free or reduced-cost enrollment in courses.
Eligibility for Senior Citizen Enrollment
Meet the requirements:
- You are a Minnesota Resident.
- Aged 62+ years (or are at least 60 years old and receiving a railroad retirement annuity).
- Register for an available space on or after the second day of the semester.
- You must meet immunization requirements as established by Minnesota law M.S. 135A.14.
- Meet the course placements and prerequisites/program requirements.
Costs for Senior Citizens
Auditing a Course (tuition and fees are waived)
If you select a grade method of "audit”:
- Tuition is free.
- Fees are waived.
- You do not earn a grade or college credit.
- This does not include standard materials, textbooks, or special course fees (these are not waived).
- You must still meet all course prerequisites and program requirements.
Taking the Course for College Credit (reduced tuition)
If you select to “earn college credit” you will pay a reduced cost for the course.
- You will pay a $20 administrative rate per credit, plus all applicable course fees.
- Standard materials, textbooks, or special course fees are not included in this reduction.
- You must still meet all course prerequisites and program requirements.
- The Senior pays an administrative fee in lieu of the published per credit tuition rate to enroll in credit courses on a space-available basis.
- This offer does not apply to college costs such as course materials, special course fees, textbooks or transportation.
Registration Procedure
How to register for free or reduced-cost courses as a senior citizen
Step 1: Apply to Minneapolis College (if you are already a student at Minneapolis College, skip this step)
- You must be admitted to Minneapolis College as a degree-seeking or non-degree seeking student before you can register.
- You will be provided with a StarID that you will use to register, if you do not already have one.
Step 2: Log-in to eServices to find Minneapolis College courses
- Go to Minneapolis College eServices and log in with your StarID and password.
- Make sure you are viewing Minneapolis Community and Technical College courses.
- Go to Courses & Registration, and then Search for a Course to find the course ID, subject, and course number. You will need this information when you complete your Senior Registration form.
Step 3: Register on or After Day Two of the Term
- Register for courses using the Senior Registration form. Submit your completed form to the Student Services Center (T.2100) or email it to registration@minneapolis.edu.

- Ensure you meet prerequisites and have selected courses with open seats.
- Complete this process before the published deadline to add the course.
- You will be notified by email when your registration has been processed.
ATTENTION:
Senior Citizen Registration forms submitted before the second day of the term will not be processed or stored by the Registrar’s Office.
Step 4: Pay Your Tuition, (If Applicable):
- If auditing the course → No tuition or fees are charged.
- If taking the course for credit → Tuition adjusts to $20 per credit plus fees.
- View your account balance in eServices. It may take up to 5-8 business days for your balance to reflect the free or reduced tuition.
- Once you can see that your balance reflects the free or reduced tuition, pay your bill online in eServices, or in person at the Student Services Center (T.2100).
Late Registration
If you want to attend the course after the add date that is listed on the course, you will need to fill out a late registration form and get the instructor's permission. This webpage shows you how to register late.
Prerequisites Verification
A prerequisite is a requirement that a student must complete before enrolling in a course. Prerequisites can include courses, active placement test scores, and other criteria established by faculty to ensure a student is prepared to be successful in a course.
Students are responsible for knowing what the specific prerequisites are for their course when registering.

Course Placement
Minneapolis College's course placement process determines a student's readiness for reading, writing, and mathematics.
These placements help students choose appropriate courses and allow them to register for both prerequisite courses needed and program courses.
Not all programs require the same course placements.
You can view your course placement information by logging in to eServices, selecting "Courses and Registration," and then selecting "Course Placement."
