Inclusive Observances
Minneapolis College strives to promote and celebrate the cultural diversity of our campus community. We believe that it is important to acknowledge the diversity of the cultural and religious identities of our members. One way to do this is by providing access to information about inclusive observances.
This resource recognizes and celebrates diverse cultural, religious, and social events throughout the year. It assists in providing visibility to members of our campus community through acknowledging various practices and traditions.
Whether you personally have a religious affiliation or not, we encourage you to utilize this resource as you are scheduling exams, programs, and events throughout the academic year. Awareness of observance dates helps to support the success of students and employees, while advancing our efforts of inclusive excellence throughout the campus.

Hanukkah | Jewish
Eight-day “Festival of Lights”, also known as Chanukah, celebrating the rededication of the Temple to the service of God in 164 BCE. Commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greek King, Antiochus, who sought to suppress freedom of worship. - 12/26/2024 - 1/1/2025
Kwanzaa
A seven-day celebration honoring African American heritage and its continued vitality. “Kwanzaa” means “first fruits (of the harvest)” in Swahili. - 12/29/2024
Wounded Knee Day
Honors the memory of the over 200 Lakota Sioux men, women, and children who were massacred by the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Thanksgiving Day
Following a 19th century tradition, it commemorates the Pilgrims’ harvest feast in the autumn of 1621. It is considered by some to be a "national day of mourning," in recognition of the conquest of Native Americans by colonists.

Coming Out Day
A day to offer support to any one coming out, while encouraging honest and open conversation about being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Commemorates October 11, 1987, when 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, for gay and lesbian equality. - 10/12/2024
Dussehra/Dassera | Hindu
Anniversary of the day when Rama killed the evil demon Ravana. Also known as Durga Puja, which celebrates the goddess Durga. - 10/12/2024
Yom Kippur | Jewish
Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar and the pinnacle of the High Holy Days starting with Rosh Hashana. It is a day of atonement devoted to fasting, introspection and prayer intended to inspire forgiveness of the past year’s mistakes and positive changes for the year ahead. - 10/14/2024

The International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is an annual day of recognition, celebrated around the world on March 31st, which is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender-expansive people, while simultaneously raising awareness of the work that is still needed to combat discrimination and violence.
