José is a first-generation American immigrant. He's also an undocumented college student.

“One day while I was having a hard day at work tearing down the roof of a house, I realized I could do something bigger. At that moment I knew I was capable of pursuing a higher education.”

José enrolled in Minneapolis College's School of Nursing program and graduated with a 3.0 GPA earlier this month. His next step is Metro State University to earn a bachelor's degree in Biology. José's sights are set on attending a top-ranked medical school and he credits Minneapolis College for helping him get there.

“I am one step closer to my dream of becoming a surgeon. Being awarded a scholarship from the Minneapolis College Foundation took a heavy burden off my shoulders. I am humbled and honored that they believed in me. I can’t wait when I become a surgeon, so that I can pay it forward by helping the underrepresented in our community.”
