Join African American Education Empowerment (AME) in celebrating Black History Month: Honoring African American Culture and Achievement by attending one of their February events.

Charles Watson, African American Empowerment Coordinator at Minneapolis College, said, “Black History Month is a concrete expression of heritage, an opportunity to promote cultural awareness, and an example of everyday resistance by claiming pride in collective accomplishments.”

Highlights of the month’s program are:

  • America and Race—Why Are We Still Here? with Dr. Lydell C. Lettsome, M.D.
The death of George Floyd and the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse once again demonstrated that many Americans view issues such freedom, personal rights, self-defense, and criminal behavior very differently. Moreover, the dividing line for these differences often begins with race. Although race is an arbitrary identifier created only a few hundred years ago, it continues to define the American experience. Please join us online for our keynote event as Dr. Lydell Lettsome explores the reasons why race continues to define us and where we go from here.
  • A Conversation and Celebration of Song with Dr. Raymond Wise and the African American Choral Ensemble of Indiana University
Dr. Raymond Wise is the Director of the African American Choral Ensemble at Indiana University, Professor of Practice, African American and African Diaspora Studies and Associate Director, African American Arts Institute.
  • An Oral History of the Black Experience in America & Winter Storytelling
Black excellence is the goal undergirding this presentation of the African American narrative. Black Storytellers Alliance will present their Harriet and Dred Scott piece as a segment of the program. American Indian Success (AIS) Program & UNITE student club are sponsoring a night of traditional storytelling featuring local indigenous storytellers.
