As we approach the final weeks before the election, I want to take a moment to share some thoughts that have been on my mind during this campaign season.

This year we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. For those of us who are eligible, voting is a civic responsibility. I hope if you haven’t already, that each of you will embrace this responsibility. While most people are focused on the upcoming presidential election, your vote is also important in deciding who will run our state and local government.

I understand that in casting one vote out of many millions, it can seem like the outcome is out of your hands. And with this election presenting such sharply different visions for the future, civic engagement may be adding to your stress during an already challenging time. The divide in the country can feel combative, yet I want to remind you that you are part of a strong, supportive community here at Minneapolis College.

If you find yourself feeling anxious, I encourage you to reach out—whether to an adviser, instructor, dean, coworker, supervisor, friend, or family member. Minneapolis College offers personal wellness counseling and other student resources, partnering with Mantra Health to offer 24/7 online mental health services and resources for currently registered students. United Way 211 also provides students with free, confidential health and human services information 24/7, connecting you with the support and guidance you need. The Minnesota State Employee Assistance Program is available to faculty and staff. Let’s remember to check in on each other and offer support when needed.

No matter what the outcome is next month, there will still be much work ahead. Progress is an ongoing effort. Addressing disparities across race, class, and gender; promoting sustainability; ensuring health care access; advancing fair housing and achieving justice all require sustained grassroots advocacy. The work you do to build the world you envision matters, even if the results take time.

If you're eligible to vote, make your voice heard on November 5th. Take care of yourself and those around you during this potentially stressful time.

Sincerely,

President Sharon Pierce
