In this workshop, Ruthanne Kim will critically trace the comprehensive anthology Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now, analyzing the pop culture moments that provide mirrors and windows.

This is an active learning session helping participants unpack how Asian Americans generate perception and meaning. 

Wednesday, March 27, noon–1:30 p.m. in T.1400

Attendees will survey the breadth and depth of diverse Asian Americans in media and reflect on how Asian American pop culture has altered the contemporary cultural landscape. Participants will expand the momentum of this rising force by contributing figures or moments they consider worthy of inclusion in this anthology. 

 

Ruthanne Soohee Crāpo Kim Bio:

Ruthanne Kim is a faculty lead organizer for Community Antiracism Education (C.A.R.E.) at St. Cloud State University and an affiliate faculty of Philosophy at Pennsylvania State University. Her research queries feminist philosophy, critical philosophy of race, Caribbean philosophy, environmental philosophy, and decolonial studies. 

Kim publishes and hosts workshops on decolonizing pedagogy, dismantling racism, supporting minoritized scholars, and ontological labor in the academy. In 2020, she received the Minnesota State Board of Trustees Excellence in Teaching Award. Her recent books include Rethinking Space, Place, and Identity with Irigaray (SUNY 2022) and a forthcoming monograph titled Forces of Creolization (UVA Press 2025). 

She is a proud member of the Korean American community, instructs dance, transports kids to hockey, gardens with mixed outcomes, and educates to elevate conscious consumption.
