According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of web developers and digital designers is projected to grow 13 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. That’s 17,900 openings for web developers and digital designers projected each year, on average, over the next decade.

Answering this enormous demand for web development professionals, Minneapolis College announced its Web Developer Certificate and .NET Developer Diploma this fall. The Web Developer Certificate focuses on front-end web technologies used for creating and publishing websites and web applications. The .NET Developer Diploma focuses on Microsoft web application server and database technologies, used to power modern web applications.

“Each award can be taken independently, however, the two compliment each other well, since both front-end web technologies and server-side technologies are needed to work together to create a web application,” said Andy Chrastek, School of Information Technology (ITEC) faculty. “Students can complete each certificate/diploma program in three semesters or earn the awards in conjunction with an A.A.S. degree in the same two-year period, or with one extra semester.”

Companies increasingly rely on web applications and delivering services over the Internet. Skilled developers are in great demand to create, maintain and expand functionality of web applications. “Most software developers will work with web technologies in some way so it is an important skill to have as a developer,” said Clara James, ITEC faculty. “It’s also rewarding to create exciting, interactive websites and students enjoy the classes and projects they work on during their studies. Once they graduate, they report high levels of career satisfaction.”

Classes are currently offered online, however, there is a potential for in-person/hybrid class offerings in the future. Minneapolis College’s faculty are known for their high level of experience teaching online, in person and hybrid classes. Students enrolled in these new programs gain valuable skills in online collaboration, professionalism and leadership, critical since remote and hybrid learning and careers are becoming the industry norm.

Students studying ITEC careers at Minneapolis College reap the benefits of the ITEC Business and Industry Advisory Board. Made up of local employers, the board helps ensure classes contain the most relevant skills in demand by employers.

Faculty members have years of industry experience and the College’s relationships with Microsoft and other technology companies provide access to the tools and technologies used in current software development jobs so students learn the latest industry skills.

The strong demand for web developers is driving the need for skilled professionals. Nearly every organization uses the web in some way so the demand for web professionals exceeds the number of graduates.

Enroll today and when you graduate, you can take your Web Developer Certificate or .NET Developer Diploma directly to an entry-level position with significant potential for advancement into senior level roles. Transfer is also possible to other colleges including transfer agreements for students with an A.A.S. degree to Metro State.
