Seeds of Hope Being Sown at Minneapolis College
On May 6, the Minneapolis College Campus Community joined together to sow seeds of hope. This Unity Gathering: Cultivating Seeds of Hope was held in the courtyard facing Hennepin Avenue.
More than 40 people attended the event as part of a series Remembering, Recentering and Reimagining: Justice for George Floyd. “Together, we affirmed our unified commitment to our Equity Statement,” said Nanette Missaghi, Director of Equity and Inclusion. While adhering to physical distancing guidelines, everyone who attended stood in the shape of a heart to illustrate the theme of Upholding Beloved Community and to signify the College’s commitment to its anti-racist journey. Attendees received a packet of wildflower seeds and were encouraged to plant them in their neighborhoods.
Remarks were provided by two President’s Council members, Patrick Troup, Vice President of Student Affairs and Interim Vice President of Equity and Inclusion, and Sharon Pierce, President, who shared words of inspiration and hope in the context of the moment of racial reckoning being experienced in the community. “By engaging in the hopeful act of planting seeds, we signify we are change agents for renewal in our beloved city,” Pierce remarked.
Participants were encouraged to sign the College’s banner displaying its Equity Statement. Under the spring sunshine, the group posed for a photo standing in the shape of a heart and enjoyed a musical performance by the College Choir.
