Executive Member Duties
As stated in the Minneapolis College Student Senate (MCSS) Bylaws, Article IX Officer Duties
Duties of the President
- Shall act as the official representative of the Minneapolis College Student Body to the campus administration, faculty, staff, MN State Colleges, LeadMN, and all other parties
- Shall be the chief enforcer and arbiter of all rules and motions passed by the Senate
- Shall preside at all meetings of the Senate and Executive Board
- Shall direct and supervise all Senate related activities
- Shall provide a performance review of the Senate Advisor to the Director of Student Life once per semester, to be made available to the student body upon request
- Shall have the joint authority to appoint student representatives to campus-wide committees alongside the Director of Advocacy
- Shall have the authority to veto any motion passed by the Senate or budget passed by the Student Life Budget Committee (SLBC).
- A Presidential Veto can be overturned by a two-thirds vote of the voting body
- Shall not vote at Senate meetings unless in order to break a tie
- Shall be restricted from serving more than five semesters
- The president shall have the ability to make Executive Decisions/Orders in times of an Emergency Situation concerning the welfare of the Student Senate and/or the Minneapolis College General Student Body
- An “emergency situation” is defined as one of the following:
- A basic need that if lost would negatively affect any portion of the Minneapolis College student body
- The loss of anything that would negatively impact the performance of Minneapolis college Student Senate
- Anything that can be construed as an emergency by a group of senators and council representatives; a group being defined as no less than three (3) senators and council representatives.
- For General Assembly voting, a simple majority of 50% + 1 of quorum upholds the Executive Decision/Order
- If the measure is passed, it becomes policy and a precedent is set.
- An “emergency situation” is defined as one of the following:
Duties of the Director of Finance
- Shall report directly to the President
- Shall administer and maintain accurate records of all budgets funded through Student Life fees
- Shall chair the Student Life Budget Committee
- Shall report to the Senate on the state of the budget once a semester or upon request
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
Duties of the Vice President
- Shall assist the President in all presidential duties
- Shall maintain membership records of all voting members and work with the Senate Advisor to ensure that voting members meet and maintain their eligibility requirements
- Shall be the official contact for all clubs and assist them in meeting the requirements for chartering and funding
- Shall have the primary authority to issue sanctions against clubs and senators that violate policies
- Must notify by email Senators, Reps., and Board members two weeks prior to revocation of their Senate membership
- Shall ensure that all policies and records are up-to-date
- Shall take attendance at Senate and Board meetings
- May delegate these duties to any voting member with approval from the President
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
- Shall co-chair the Student Life and Budget Committee
Duties of the Director of Advocacy
- Shall report directly to the President
- Shall oversee both Advocacy and other Sub-Committees run by senators.
- Shall coordinate Student Advocacy Days at the State Legislature with Senator of Legislative Affairs
- Shall audit all current and new campus policies and actions to ensure they are not harmful to the environment alongside the Senator of Sustainability
- Shall oversee the Senators of & delegate duties to other board members as approved by the President
- Shall work with the Executive Board members, Senate Advisor and LeadMN to bring educational awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion of various topics determined by General Assembly.
Duties of the Director of Communications
- Shall report directly to the President
- Shall promote Senate and recruit new members
- Shall ensure that all Senate social media accounts and bulletin boards are up to date
- Shall notify the student body, administration, faculty, and staff about all Senate events
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
Duties of the Secretary
- Shall report directly to President and Director of Advocacy
- Shall take minutes at Advocacy Committee & GA meetings and report the minutes to the D2L homepage
- Shall coordinate meetings between board members, college faculty, staff and other students as needed
Duties of the Director of Information Technology
- Shall report directly to the President
- Shall coordinate between Student Senate and the General Assembly regarding any current IT issues
- Shall coordinate meetings between Minneapolis College CIO and Student Senate and invite any necessary parties to discuss current IT student needs
- Shall oversee the IT committee and report back to the Student Senate General Assembly
Senator Roles & Responsibilities
As stated in the Minneapolis College Student Senate (MCSS) Bylaws, Article IX Senator Duties
Senator of Health & Sustainability
- Shall report directly to the Director of Advocacy
- Shall audit all current and new campus policies and actions to ensure they are not harmful to the environment alongside the Director of Advocacy
- Shall help educate the student body on sustainability through events, forums, tabling, etc.
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
- Shall oversee and coordinate Green Team initiatives and Zero-Waste events on campus
Senator of Diversity
- Shall report directly to the Director of Advocacy
- Shall audit all current and new campus policies and actions to ensure they are non-discriminatory
- Shall work to ensure that the Senate and campus remains inclusive to all students
- Shall advise the Senate on campus, state, and federal initiatives regarding diversity
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
Senator of Legislative Affairs
- Shall report directly to the Director of Advocacy
- Shall advise the Senate on campus, state, federal, LEAD MN, and MN State policies and legislation
- Shall organize elections for Executive Board positions and all general Get-Out-the-Vote (GOTV) efforts
- Shall coordinate Student Advocacy Days at the State Legislature
- Shall assume other duties as may be assigned by the President
