Minneapolis College Unveils New Public Safety Utility Vehicle
‘The vehicle allows Public Safety a highly visible customer service option in carrying out daily activities.’
The Minneapolis College Public Safety Department will enhance its visibility in the community with the purchase of a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) that will provide additional safety and security in and around the Minneapolis College campus.
“The new vehicle will enhance the Public Safety Department’s ability to efficiently patrol the campus parking ramp and other outdoor areas throughout the year,” said Curt Schmidt, Director of Public Safety. “The vehicle allows Public Safety a highly visible customer service option in carrying out daily activities.”
“There is no higher priority than providing a safe environment for students and employees,” said Minneapolis College President Sharon Pierce. “We are fortunate to have a highly trained Public Safety Department that is dedicated to keeping us safe on campus every day by exploring new tools, training and community-building techniques.”
‘Proactive Approach to Safety’
Schmidt said the decision to purchase the UTV was based on the results of a survey of more than 1,000 students and employees about campus safety.
“It is indicative of College Administration’s proactive approach to safety,” Schmidt said.
The vehicle will be highly visible, outfitted with amber emergency lights for quick identification and wrapped in Minneapolis College branded colors.
"Its presence is part of a broader public safety program that promotes a safe campus environment," Schmidt said.
Minneapolis College students have reacted positively to the expanded safety and security measures.
Student Senate Support
“Public Safety has always been both informative and helpful across campus,” said Student Senate President Brian Lindell.
“I have always been comfortable with my personal safety due to the awareness and presence that Public Safety provides. I have always seen every station within the Minneapolis College campus occupied and the staff helpful and friendly. Any request I've had has always been met with a professional and prompt response, and I feel that this dedication to serve is what makes students feel safe.”
Lindell added he has seen Public Safety attend to issues with patrons outside of campus when required and have always addressed any public needs appropriately.
“Public Safety provides an excellent and secure atmosphere at Minneapolis College to best provide a safe and personal educational experience for students across campus,” Lindell said.
The Public Safety officers who operate the UTV will have a valid Minnesota Driver’s License and a driving record approved by Minnesota State Risk Management. Additionally, officers receive classroom training outlining the UTV Policy, UTV operations, and will be required to complete and pass a driving test administered by a certified in-house UTV trainer.
Please take the time to stop and talk to the officers as you see them out patrolling in the new Public Safety vehicle. Feedback is always appreciated.
