Student Accordion Fold Drawings on Display in the Library Now - Nov. 8

The Accordion Fold Book Project from Laura Andrews' Drawing 1 class is now on display in the lobby of the Library through Nov. 8.

In this project, students were studying contour line technique, methods of developing implied texture and use of repetition and variation to create rhythm in a composition. Contour line technique is a drawing technique where the artist uses varied line weight or width to imply planar shifts, edges, overlap and three-dimensional form.

Each student began with a blank accordion fold book and a few objects that have interesting texture. Then they drew their subject(s), repeating them, shifting their perspective, overlapping edges and varying positions. Some blew up the size and zoomed in on the subject, others created a carefully balanced composition. All looked at other books as well as Japanese screens for inspiration.
