What it is

The American Indian Studies certificate is an ideal stepping-stone for students interested in a four-year program in American Indian Studies. The program offers a concentrated study of the historical and contemporary issues of Native American peoples and cultures, with emphasis on Native Americans in Minnesota.

Program Learning Outcomes

Articulate an understanding of and appreciation for the diversity and validity of the history, literature, art, spirituality, practices and political struggles of various American Indian cultures, perspectives and experiences in the past and the present.
Appreciate and/or use the Indigenous languages of America for basic conversation purposes.
Demonstrate a more specific understanding of the history, culture and contemporary experiences of American Indian tribes in Minnesota; in particular, Dakota and Ojibwe.
Develop and incorporate the skills and methodologies of American Indian Studies, such as critical thinking, field work, data collection, interviews and academic writing.
Demonstrate knowledge of how Native and non-native historians and social scientists discover, describe and explain the behaviors and interactions among individuals, groups, institutions, events and ideas of the Indigenous Nations of the Americas.
