From Recovery to Leadership
ALESSANDRA ELARAR
My Minneapolis College Story
As a transgender woman in recovery, returning to education was a monumental step. The fear of being judged and facing discrimination was overwhelming. Additionally, as an adult learner, I worried about how I would be perceived by younger students and whether I could keep up academically. However, I was determined to reclaim my future. The support from my peers and faculty was instrumental in navigating this journey.
Being elected as Student Senate President has been life-changing. It provided a platform to voice concerns and advocate for all students, especially those facing significant obstacles. Leading initiatives that promote inclusivity and diversity has been incredibly rewarding.
This semester, the curriculum opened my eyes to intersectional issues, igniting a passion to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. Walking through the halls of Minneapolis College, I am filled with hope. The diverse faces and vibrant energy inspire me daily, reminding me that I am not alone.
My journey has not been easy, but it has been worth every step. I have grown as a student, leader, and advocate. My story is a testament to resilience, community, and the impact of education.
