Mask-wearing, Vaccinations and Service Hours

As cases of COVID-19 continue to spike across the state, it’s important to stay steadfast in helping prevent spread of the virus. Studies show that wearing a mask properly is a critical step to staying safe. You should also continue to wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes, avoid touching your face and follow physical distancing rules.

The CDC says you should wear the most protective mask possible—one that fits and that you can tolerate wearing for extended periods. Respirators such as nonsurgical N95s give the most protection. KN95s and medical masks provide the next highest level of protection. Cloth masks provide less protection.

KN95 and N95 Respirators

Numerous employees have expressed interest in wearing KN95 and N95 respirators voluntarily on campus. When properly selected, worn and maintained, they are an effective way to protect oneself against COVID-19. If improperly used or not kept clean, the respirator itself can become a hazard.

  • Read and follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer on use, maintenance and cleaning. Heed all warnings regarding the respirator’s limitations.
  • Choose a respirator that is certified to protect against COVID-19. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) certifies them. A label or statement of certification should appear on the respirator, or on its packaging. This label says what the respirator is designed for and how much it will protect you.
  • Keep track of your respirator so that you do not mistakenly use someone else's.

Employees electing to wear an N95 respirator on campus are required to review the OSHA information for employees using respirators when not required.

The College is recommending the use of KN95 masks on campus for those who tolerate them well. While supplies last, KN95s will be available at the Public Safety Desk or for delivery via a Facilities Work Order.

Vaccinations

Vaccination is proving to be the best way to avoid serious health complications associated with the coronavirus. Get a vaccination or booster as soon as you can.

Accurate vaccine information is critical and can help stop common myths and rumors. It can be difficult to know which sources of information you can trust. The CDC has provided a helpful guide to COVID-19 vaccination myths and facts.

Student Services on Campus

Due to staffing shortages, and to create a safe environment for everyone, Student Affairs operations are moving temporarily to a new delivery model that emphasizes virtual access. Limited staffing will be provided for in-person services in the Welcome Center and the adjacent presentation room during regular hours of operation until February 25. This temporary delivery model allows all services to remain available while keeping our employees and students safe.

On-campus services will continue at previous levels for the Wednesday food pantry, faculty-arranged testing and student crisis support.
