Racial equity in Early Learning

During this engaging hybrid workshop, Dr. Sturdivant will share the importance of starting early with work that supports positive racial identities. Then, participants will engage in activities and small group discussions and reflect on ways to affirm racial identity in early learning spaces. Through brief lectures and interactive activities, participants will leave with an actionable plan to support the developing identities of children in their current or future classrooms, as well as those they help to influence outside of the classroom.

Participants will:

  • understand the importance of affirming marginalized racial identities
  • understand the importance of starting in infancy when affirming race
  • engage in racially affirming activities for young children
  • establish a plan to affirm racial identities in early learning programs

Speaker bio:
Toni Sturdivant is director of Early Learning and Head Start for the Mid-America Regional Council in Kansas City, MO.  She is also a parent, coach, professor and author who focuses on young children’s racial identity.  She has spent her career developing a library of books and a collection of teaching ideas for the early childhood classroom that will help young children establish a positive racial identity.
