About the time commitment for chemistry classes:
- A 4-credit chemistry class, regardless of whether it is delivered on campus, hybrid, or online, has the equivalent of 3 hours of lecture (3 credits) and 2 hours of lab (1 credit) per week.
- For every hour of lecture and lab, students can expect to spend 1-3 additional hours of study time per week.

CHEM 1020 - 01, 02, and 03 (On Campus)
- Two lectures on campus each week – each of the lecture sessions is 75 minutes
- All labs on campus - lab meets once a week, each lab is 100 minutes.
CHEM 1020 - 60, 61, and 62 (Blended/Hybrid)
- One lecture on campus - lecture meets once a week on campus for 75 minutes
- Additional lectures online - no scheduled/required Zoom meetings
- All labs on campus - lab meets once a week, each lab is 100 minutes.
CHEM 1020 - 63, 64, and 65 (Blended/Hybrid)
- One lecture on campus - lecture meets once a week on campus for 75 minutes
- Additional lectures online - no scheduled/required Zoom meetings
- All labs on campus - lab meets once a week, each lab is 100 minutes.
CHEM 1020 - 66, 67, and 68 (Blended/Hybrid)
- All lectures are online - no scheduled/required Zoom meetings
- All labs on campus - lab meets once a week, each lab is 100 minutes.
CHEM 1020 - 80, 81, and 82 (Completely Online Asynchronous)
- Lab activities and lecture are online. No in-person or online scheduled weekly meetings will be required. The instructor will conduct online office hours at a scheduled time each week via Zoom. At the beginning of the semester, the instructor will provide guidance about course structure, schedule, and planned interaction or engagement.
- You must purchase a lab kit from the Science Interactive (SI) Company to conduct experiments independently at home. You must have the kit on hand within the first two weeks of the semester.
Details:
- You must have access to a computer, internet, and printer.
- Activate your Minneapolis College email account. It is absolutely necessary to communicate with you in this online course before the semester starts and throughout the semester.
- You are expected to complete all the steps in the Student Checklist. This checklist has links in it if you need help with your email or other issues. The email account and the orientation are especially important.
- Either before the semester begins or within the first week, you are expected to become familiar with the online format of the course. Check with your advisor and instructor for orientation sessions. You must learn how to find the course materials in D2L, how to download them, and to efficiently use, create and upload Word and PDF documents.
- For all the lecture materials, there are weekly modules in D2L with Powerpoint presentations, videos and narrated recordings, a weekly calendar, and hyperlinks to the necessary materials. The weekly quizzes, homework, term exams, final exam, discussion participation etc., are all online through D2L.
- For the lab-kit, please contact instructor or check email messages from instructor sent to your college email account, for details on how to purchase the kit and to get the enrollment information for enrolling on the lab kit website of the vendor. These instructions will also be available in the course site in D2L.
- You may purchase the lab-kit using financial aid funds through getting a voucher from the College Store and then redeem it with the Science Interactive Company. Or you can directly purchase it from the vendor not using financial aid, for a lesser cost. Be aware the deadline for applying for financial aid is the same for both regular start sections and the late start sections.
- If you are a PSEO student, please contact your PSEO coordinator at your school as well as Minneapolis College about using financial aid.
- Procedures for the experiments to conduct at home are available through the Science Interactive Company’s website link.
- Check if your instructor has made access available to the D2L course site before the semester begins, to get an early preview on things you should do to be prepared for the first week of the semester. The SI Company labs access will become available as soon as you create the account and place the order for the lab kit.
CHEM 1020 - 83, 84, and 85 (Completely Online Asynchronous, Late Start)
- This is a late start section, which is faster paced, as the contents are covered in 12 weeks as compared to a full semester with 17 weeks. The D2L course page and all material will be open and available the full 17 weeks of the semester however, so the student is welcome to work ahead.

CHEM 1140 - 60, 61, and 62 (Blended/Hybrid)
This 4-credit course includes both lecture and laboratory activities. This is a liberal-arts chemistry course meeting Goal Areas 3 (Natural Sciences) and 9 (Ethical and Civic Responsibility).
This course does NOT serve as a prerequisite for higher level science courses.
- Lab activities on-campus once a week for 100 minutes.
- Lecture component online - no scheduled/required Zoom meetings.
Generally, plan on two online quizzes each week: Learning Resources (video links, notes, etc.) posted on D2L.
CHEM 1140 - 80, 81, and 82 (Completely Online Asynchronous)
- All of the instruction in this course will be conducted online. No in-person or online scheduled meetings will be required. The instructor will conduct office hours at a scheduled time each week via zoom. At the beginning of the semester, the instructor will provide guidance about course structure, schedule, and planned interaction or engagement.
- CHEM 1140 asynchronous online uses a lab kit put together at Minneapolis College. There is no extra charge for this kit. We do need a mailing address. These addresses will be collected via D2L. This mailing address does not need to be the home address; it can be a friend or relative or a rented package locker also.
