Title

Policy 4.20

Subtitle

Veterans Academic Policy

Body

Part 1. Purpose

This policy establishes guidelines and clear standards regarding veteran and veteran’s dependents enrollment and the use of veteran’s benefits for courses at Minneapolis College.

Part 2. Definitions

Veteran: A person who is currently serving or has served in the United States armed forces and has been discharged under honorable conditions; or a dependent of a service member who has had benefits transferred to them.

Part 3. U.S Department of Veterans Affairs Requirements

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs requires that all students who receive veteran benefits complete the number of credits required for benefit entitlement. This regulation is based on credits earned each term.

Subpart A. Rate of Pursuit

For the fall and spring semesters, Veteran credit levels are assessed based on the Rate of Pursuit, which assumes 12-semester credits as “full-time equivalent.”
Fall and Spring Rates of Pursuit:

  • Full Time Equivalent = 12 credits
  • ¾ Time = 9, 10, or 11 credits
  • ½ Time = 7 to 8 credits
  • 6 credits or less = Tuition Only

Summer Rates of Pursuit are as follows:

  • Full Time Equivalent = 6 Credits
  • ½ Time = 3 Credits

A veteran who falls below the credit levels outlined above will have benefits adjusted according to the number of credits registered for that term.

Subpart B. Incomplete Grades

Incomplete grades are allowed if they are converted to a letter grade within the incomplete timeframe outlined in Minneapolis College Policy 3.08 Grading. If an incomplete is not completed or “made up,” adjustment of benefits will be made based on completion of the course and assigned grade.

Subpart C. Course Withdrawal

Withdrawal from courses for which the student has received benefits will mean a reduction of benefits and an overpayment.

Subpart D. Reporting to the Veteran’s Affairs

Grades are reported to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at the end of each term.

  • Information gathered on students will be used only to further a student's educational programs.
  • Requests for information by telephone will not be honored.
  • Students must request academic transcripts in writing.
