KingDemetrius

Please meet KingDemetrius. He found his way to Minneapolis College as a father in his 40s after facing countless barriers and challenges, even heartbreak. In November 2013, his daughter was killed by a drunk driver. Her tragic death strained his family, ultimately ripping them apart. Left feeling hopeless, KingDemetrius knew he needed to find his purpose. Pursuing higher education was his first step. He chose Minneapolis College, where his late daughter attended, seeking the opportunities a college credential provides.

As a nontraditional student, adjusting to college life and a technology-heavy major proved challenging. The memory of his daughter and his 9 other children kept him going.

“I needed my children to see their dad coming to school on the good days and the bad. Receiving the Kirk E. Washington Promise Scholarship made it possible for my family to see me succeed, changed my way of thinking, gave me purpose, and made sure I got a fair shake at life.”

KingDemetrius just graduated in May with a 4.0 GPA and is putting his Photography & Digital Imaging associate degree to good use as an independent journalist.

“My photos will outlive me. I must show the state of our community in its rawest form and never apologize for exposing the truth.”
