Advocating for Student Needs
Ever since Ibtisam Mohamoud was a young girl, she dreamed of being the kind of person who would have a hand in solving the world’s problems. The dream grew into an interest in government and politics in 2016 when she began immersing herself in studying the process. It was then she embraced the lifelong goal of being a congresswoman or senator.
In the fall of 2020, after graduating from Columbia Heights High School, she enrolled at Minneapolis College and began studying political science. After only a few months on campus, Mohamoud knew she wanted impact positive change. She sought and was elected to the position of Director of Advocacy on the Student Senate.
“My vision for this role is to understand and advocate for student needs at Minneapolis College,” said Mohamoud who recognizes housing, transportation, tuition and student loans are major barriers for many of her peers. “I look forward to listening and better understanding the challenges people face, educating myself on potential solutions and collaborating with my peers to impact positive change on campus.”
Mohamoud takes her role on the Student Senate extremely seriously and promises to be a voice for people who are unable to speak for themselves.
“I plan to be mindful of everyone and everything possible,” said Mohamoud who notes having this position is both scary and exciting. “I will be mindful of diversity, culture and community as I seek to create meaningful change that will impact students for generations to come.”
Mohamoud has been inspired by community leaders, including Illhan Omar. She hopes to one day be that same inspiration for others. After graduating from Minneapolis College, she plans to transfer to the University of Minnesota to pursue her bachelor’s degree in political science. She is also considering graduate studies in public policy.
