At Minneapolis College, supporting students goes beyond the classroom. This spring, the College is expanding its commitment to basic needs by offering TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) commodities through the campus Food Pantry.

TEFAP is a federally supported program that provides free, nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. With this addition, eligible students and community members can access additional grocery items—at no cost—to help stretch their budgets and support their well-being.

“I am grateful that the Minneapolis College Food Pantry will now be offering TEFAP commodities to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Over the past several months, the Student Resource Center team has worked diligently to secure approval through The Food Group to offer TEFAP. This achievement reflects the team’s strong commitment to expanding access to food and meeting the basic needs of our campus community, said Heidi Goettl, Director of the Student Resource Center.

Who is eligible?

Many members of our community may qualify. Eligibility is designed to be straightforward and accessible:

  • Income-based eligibility: Households with income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level
  • Self-declared income: No extensive documentation required—just a simple, honest certification
  • Minnesota residency requirement
  • Automatic eligibility for those participating in programs such as SNAP, WIC, TANF, Medicaid, or SSI

The Minneapolis College Food Pantry can help determine eligibility. Email resources@minneapolis.edu for more information.

How it works

TEFAP distribution begins on Wednesday, March 18.

  • Hours: Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Location: Minneapolis College Food Pantry
  • Process: Complete a brief weekly eligibility certification
  • What to expect: Participants will receive a pre-packed bag of available TEFAP items

TEFAP foods are separate from the pantry’s regular offerings, and items will vary depending on supply. While the College will do its best to meet demand, quantities are limited and may run out.

A commitment to student success

Access to healthy food is foundational to academic success, stability, and overall well-being. By bringing TEFAP to campus, Minneapolis College continues to reduce barriers and ensure students have the resources they need to thrive.
