Alum Sarah

Sarah Moe wasn’t always referred to as “Sarah Sleep.” She earned that nickname through her illustrious career in sleep technology, a career that started at Minneapolis College. With just one of 7 accredited Sleep Technology programs in the country, choosing Minneapolis College was a no brainer for Sarah, but this was after some soul searching.

Sarah Moe started her college career at University of Wisconsin River Falls with the dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. After a year, her academic dreams were sidelined by a realization that her calling may not be in the classroom. She took a year off to rethink her plan and save money to return to college. When she returned, it was to Minneapolis College in the Polysomnography (Sleep Technology) program.

“The knowledgeable faculty made class impactful and the cohort model made me feel extremely supported. After completing the introductory class, I knew I found my passion."

Sarah graduated in 2008 and hit the ground running. She began working with patients in neurological clinics, analyzing their habits and diagnosing sleep disorders. Just four years after graduating, Sarah returned to Minneapolis College, this time as an adjunct faculty teaching polysomnography courses to her future colleagues.

“My original major was elementary education. While I decided not to pursue that, I still knew I wanted to teach in some capacity. This experience proved to me that I am meant to combine my passions and informed my decision of starting my own business.”

With nearly a decade’s worth of experience on her side, Sarah took a leap of faith and founded Sleep Health Specialists. SHS provides sleep health education to local businesses and corporations. By learning how sleep plays an integral role in their daily and work lives, employees are able to achieve optimal health, wellness and productivity. She’s worked with clients ranging from agencies with 5 employees to Fortune 500 companies, recommending ways they can combat employee fatigue.

That’s not all. Sarah served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Sleep Society and the American Association of Sleep Technologists Educational Products Committee. In these volunteer roles, she created professional development materials for new sleep technologists, lobbied the American Medical Association to challenge the lack of sleep medicine education in medical schools, and lobbied local school districts for later middle and high school start times.

You can catch Sarah on the WCCO morning show once a month, sharing her expertise with viewers. Last but not least, Sarah is the recipient of a 2019 Women in Business Award from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. What a resume! Our alumni never cease to amaze us with their accomplishments.
