Minneapolis College is proud to announce a new initiative, Breakthrough 2020–Bridging the Equity Gap. Established out of the social justice movement of 2020, surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd, this initiative seeks to identify, educate and cultivate future leaders through an affirming, learning-centered cohort experience where students are empowered to complete their educational journey, better themselves and their communities.

The primary focus will be on men age 18-24 who reside in Minneapolis and who have graduated from a Minneapolis school or received a GED after attending a Minneapolis school. Students will be part of a cohort, tailored to address the unique experiences of African American, Black and American Indian students in Minneapolis. Students will be provided supportive faculty, staff, and student-centered services and resources that equip them with the information, motivation and agency needed to attain their education, achieve their career goals and become leaders in their communities.

Planning and student recruitment for the program will begin with the new academic year this fall. The first cohort of students is expected to begin their studies in the 2021-22 academic year. Planning and implementation of this initiative is made possible through a generous gift of a single donor who, through this gift, hopes to inspire others to give and help the Minneapolis College Foundation realize a $2M endowment to fund the program in perpetuity.

Minneapolis College is one of the most diverse community college campuses in Minnesota, with 70% of our student population identifying as low income, first generation and students of color. There’s a place here for everyone. Help Minneapolis College eliminate barriers and build bridges to a more equitable society.
