When Daniela Moreno Reyes moved to the United States from the capital city of Armenia of the Quindio department in Western Columbia 3 years ago to study English, she had no idea one of the most meaningful experiences of her life was ahead of her at Minneapolis College.

“One year into my English studies in Minneapolis, I found myself looking for colleges,” said Daniela, who is currently taking her generals before applying to a major university to complete her bachelor’s in environmental science and marketing. “Everyone kept encouraging me to apply to and study at Minneapolis College. Now that I’m here, I couldn’t imagine studying anywhere else.”

Since starting at the College, Daniela has been impressed by the diversity of classes and student population, the close connection between instructors and students and the exposure she has to different ideas and opinions.

“I am always learning on campus,” said Daniela. “I am inspired by everyone at Minneapolis College. We are a community in harmony with one another and without discrimination.”

In addition to taking a heavy course load of 16 credits, Daniela is employed in the College’s work-study program serving as a both a tutor in the Academic Success Center and support services staff member in the Student Service Center. “I work alongside students of all ages who are from all over the world including Iran, Iraq, Africa and Turkey to name a few,” said Daniela. “It is such a great experience working and learning in such a diverse community.”

International student advisor Anni Bowers remembers when Daniela first came to the College and notes the growth in her academics and individualism. “Daniela has always been inquisitive, asking a lot of questions to garner as much information as

possible,” said Anni, who supports international students as they navigate learning on campus and follow international student visa guidelines. “Fast forward to today and she’s the smart, sweet, positive force behind the information desk answering questions for others!”

Growing up in Columbia surrounded by nature, Daniela aspires to work on behalf of the environment she has always loved. “I want to be a part of the change our community needs,” said Daniela who knows when she feels injustice, she is inspired to do something about it. “When I better understand the complexities of how we affect our environment, I will be prepared to impact change. My educational journey has a good start at Minneapolis College. ”

When asked about her advice for others considering attending Minneapolis College, Daniela exclaims, “Go for it!”
