Viruses constantly change through mutation, and sometimes these mutations result in a new variant of the virus. There is a lot of uncertainty around COVID-19 variants, which may leave us feeling confused or concerned for the health and well-being of our campus community.

The Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) national COVID Data Tracker shows the average number of cases trending up, but deaths and hospitalizations are on a downward trajectory.

The CDC currently assesses Hennepin County’s COVID-19 community level as “low.” This assessment incorporates local transmission rates, available hospital beds and the number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19. More information about COVID-19 community levels can be found on the CDC webpage.

This week, Minneapolis College had its first reported incident of on-campus transmissions of COVID-19. To maintain a safe working and learning environment, all employees and students should be familiar with the health and safety practices that help prevent illness and exposure to COVID-19 and other viruses.

All campus visitors should be vigilant. The Omicron variant has proven more contagious than previous variants of the COVID-19 virus. We are asking community members to physically distance by six feet whenever possible. Doing so will reduce the number of close contacts and opportunities for transmission on campus.

Continue to do what works:

  • Get a vaccination or booster as soon as you can. Vaccination is proving to be the best way to avoid serious health complications associated with the coronavirus.
  • Wearing a well-fitted mask that meets CDC guidelines can add a layer of protection. Please respect and support employees and students who choose to wear a mask.
  • Stay home if you are sick. Many symptoms of the Omicron variant are like a bad cold or the flu. If you have any of the symptoms, email immediately and do not come to campus.
  • Get tested if you have any of these symptoms or believe you were exposed to COVID-19.
  • Wash your hands to reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission. This also reduces your exposure to influenza, colds or other illnesses.

Minneapolis College continues to follow guidance from the CDC, Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota State System Office.
