Power of YOU Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Power of YOU program?
The Power of YOU is an academic support program that can make your dream of attending college tuition-free a possibility. POY student tuition is covered through state and federal grants for up to 3 years or 72 attempted credits. A privately funded incentive program assists students with the cost of books, transportation, meal cards and personal emergencies.
The Power of YOU supports as many students as possible based on student need and funds available.
2) What criteria do students need to meet in order to be eligible for the Power of YOU program?

3) Do I have to live in Minneapolis or Saint Paul to be eligible for the Power of YOU?
No. We accept students from all Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding suburban public, private, charter or alternative high schools.
4) Am I eligible for the Power of YOU if I have been out of high school for a year or more?
No. In order to be eligible for the program, you must graduate the same year as your fall enrollment into Minneapolis College. (i.e., graduate spring 2019, start Minneapolis College fall 2019)
5) If I obtain a GED (General Education Diploma/high school diploma equivalency) am I eligible for the Power of YOU?
No. At the time of application you must be in your senior year of high school and be expecting to receive your high school diploma the spring before you attend Minneapolis College.
6) Do I have to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for the Power of YOU?
Yes. Eligibility for the Power of YOU requires you to fill out the 2020-2021 FAFSA.
7) If I qualify for financial aid, what costs will the Power of YOU cover?
Federal and State grants cover your tuition and mandatory student fees. The Power of YOU will cover any remaining balance. The Power of YOU has a privately funded incentive program to assist students with the cost of books, transportation, meal cards and personal emergencies for students who meet program requirements.
8) How is being a Power of YOU student different than being a regular student at Minneapolis College?
NONE OF THE STUDENTS AT MINNEAPOLIS COLLEGE ARE REGULAR!
However, POY offers our students one-on-one, same-day access to their POY Advisor, Community Engagement Opportunities, Career Assessments and Exploration, a unique First Year Student Transition course and the ability to earn incentives to cover the cost of books, transportation, meal cards and personal emergencies.
9) Are there any scholarships available to complete a 4 year degree after completing my first 2 years in the Power of YOU?
Yes. Augsburg University offers a scholarship to POY students who successfully complete their Associates Degree at Minneapolis College in two years called The Auggie Plan. POY students are encouraged to work closely with their POY Advisor for assistance in the scholarship application process.
10) How is acceptance into POY determined?
Acceptance into POY is determined by completing all of the application steps ON OR BEFORE the deadline. After the deadline applicants are chosen by a committee based upon the greatest financial need and completion of application on or before the deadline
11) How will students find out if they have been accepted into the Power of YOU program?
Students accepted to POY will be notified via email on June 5, 2020. Once you have been accepted you must attend a mandatory POY orientation. You will choose the orientation date in your acceptance letter.
Students not accepted to POY will receive a letter of decline by June 12, 2020.
12) If I become a POY student what am I required to do?
- Enroll as a full-time student (12 - 15 credits)
- Maintain 2.5 grade point average each semester
- Attend classes on time daily
- Meet with POY Advisor three times each semester
- Complete 10 hours of Community Engagement each semester
- Complete Professor Feedback forms BEFORE mid-terms each semester
13) If I am a D3 or PSEO Student is my acceptance into POY guaranteed?
No. Students in the D3 program and PSEO must complete the same application process of all applicants.
Applicants are not guaranteed acceptance into POY.
